And with the help of a good file manager, you can see how user-friendly that flexibility can be. The SSH toolset is perfect example at how flexible Linux can be. You’d be hard-pressed to find a platform more powerful and more flexible than Linux. If you happen to use Ubuntu, the process is very similar–the difference being you must first click on Other Locations and then enter the remote address at the bottom of the window ( Figure B).įigure B The power and flexibility of Linux Obviously, you can only work within directories in which the user has permission, so navigate into such a directory and you can then use that file manager to copy/paste files to and from the remote server. Once you’ve successfully authenticated, you’ll find yourself in the / directory of the remote machine. Hit Enter on your keyboard and you’ll be prompted for the remote user’s SSH login credentials. Click in the navigation bar and then type sftp://SERVERIP (where SERVERIP is the IP address of the remote server– Figure A). To make the connection, open up your file manager.

I’ll demonstrate on Pantheon Files, but the process is similar on most Linux file managers. Once you have everything installed, you’re ready to go. The server-side of things requires the command: I’ll demonstrate on my platforms of choice. On the off-chance you don’t have these tools installed, they can be added easily. Fortunately, nearly every single Linux distribution comes with openssh installed by default. You will also need openssh installed on the client machine as well. Obviously, you’ll need to have a server running openssh-server.

I’m going to demonstrate how to connect to a remote Ubuntu 16.04 server, via the sftp protocol, using both Elementary OS Pantheon Files and GNOME Files (on Ubuntu 17.10).
Pantheon open in terminal ubuntu install#
With that in mind, you can enjoy a GUI sftp experience, without having to install a third-party solution (such as FileZilla).Īs you might expect, this is quite easy to pull off. If that’s you, you’re in luck, as most Linux file managers (such as GNOME Files, Nautilus, Nemo, Thunar, Dolphin, Pantheon Files, etc) all have built-in support for SSH and its included tools. You can upload files with the command put FILENAME (Where FILENAME is the name of the file).īut what if you don’t want to work with the command line? Maybe you find the GUI a more efficient tool.

Once logged in, you can then download files onto your local machine with the command get FILENAME (Where FILENAME is the name of the file). Open up a terminal window and log in with the command ssh (Where USERNAME is the actual remote username and IPADDRESS is the address of the remote machine). So instead of risking the transfer of files over an insecure means, you can make use of SSH, via sftp. Not only does it allow you to easily administer your Linux servers remotely (by way of the command ssh), it also includes a more secure version of the File Transfer Protocol (FTP). If a fear of the command line has prevented you from making use of the more secure sftp, Jack Wallen wants to show you how you can easily connect to that remote server, with a simple file manager. Don't go there, as you will enter the zone that many here are so scared of.How to use Linux file manager to connect to an sftp server If you see any warnings to that extend, you've taken a wrong turn somewhere. You may have to go through that cycle a few times as some dependencies will have their own dependencies as well.Īt no time should the old 20.04 be overwriting 22.04 packages. Simply go by the error messages and download+ dpkg -i the packages needed. (If you omit using apt, you have a higher chance of breaking 22.04 by force-installing old packages from 20.04.) Fortunately it's only a few, and those don't conflict with Ubuntu 22.04.

As mentioned, there will be more dependencies that you need to manually download and install from. This will allow you to install pantheon-tweaks using apt. That does not work as there's no package for jammy yet. The 404 you get is probably because /etc/apt/source.list/philip_scott-ubuntu-pantheon-tweaks-jammy.list now contains: Only those that do not exist in 22.04, you should then manually download from 20.04, using. That way most dependencies will be pulled from Ubuntu 22.04 automatically. (This is not a guarantee, but as you run 22.04 already, there's little harm in going the extra mile to see if you can get what you want.)įirst, make sure you install pantheon-tweaks using apt. Despite the "beta" in both of them, I experience no issues whatsoever, so don't be discouraged. I run the Elementary 7 beta on Ubuntu 22.04 beta.
